A University Student, Stage Four, and Four Sessions to Go

She is twenty-three, in the middle of a university degree, and in the middle of a fight no one her age should have to think about.

She lives with her parents in the Greater Cairo area, where her father teaches at a school for industrial education. She has stage four cancer in her stomach and in the lining that wraps around the organs. Her treatment plan calls for chemotherapy and a hormonal immunotherapy injection, four sessions in all, each costing about 45,000 EGP.

Her church and her family have already paid for the first two. That sentence holds a quiet story of its own: a community emptying its pockets to keep a young woman in treatment, session by session, for as long as they could.

But they could not reach the end. Two sessions remain, and the cost of finishing what was started is 90,000 EGP, roughly $1,800.

There is a particular cruelty to running out of money halfway through cancer treatment. The hardest moment is not always the beginning. Sometimes it is the point where a family has given everything they have and the treatment is only half done.

Luke's Kids stepped in to fund the final two sessions, so she can complete this round and return to her doctors to plan what comes next. A young woman this deep into her degree and her treatment should be thinking about her recovery, not her family's bank account.
